ANSWER GUIDE

Build a STAR answer from your own experience

Use situation, task, action, and result to make a behavioural answer clear without making it sound memorized.

Choose an example with a real decision

Start with an event you remember well enough to answer follow-ups. The example does not need to be dramatic. A clear account of resolving a small disagreement or improving a process is stronger than a grand story you cannot substantiate.

Identify what the question is testing: ownership, collaboration, prioritization, learning, or judgment. Choose an example that actually demonstrates that behavior.

Give each part a purpose

  • Situation: Give enough context to understand the problem.
  • Task: State your responsibility and the constraint.
  • Action: Explain your decisions and contribution; distinguish them from the team’s work.
  • Result: Describe the outcome using evidence you have. Add what you learned or would change.

Spend most of the answer on actions and reasoning. Avoid turning the setup into a history of the entire project.

An illustrative example

Our release was blocked by inconsistent acceptance criteria. I was responsible for clarifying the remaining scope. I collected the disputed cases, proposed a short decision meeting, and documented which items were required for launch and which could follow. The team agreed on a shared checklist and completed the release review. I learned to make acceptance criteria explicit earlier.

This is a fictional structure example, not a customer quote or a claim you should adopt. Replace every detail with something true of your own work. Add a number only if you can explain its source.

Practise without memorizing a script

Write five bullet points, answer aloud, and ask a follow-up such as “Why did you choose that approach?” Keep the useful structure but vary the wording. When reviewing an AI suggestion, remove inflated language, unsupported outcomes, and actions someone else performed.

Use the free STAR worksheet to assemble your notes in your browser. You can then use your reviewed context in AskDADA for a practice session.
