Start with the role you actually want

IT support interviews test how you investigate a problem and how you treat the person reporting it. Your answer needs an order: establish impact, gather evidence, make a safe change, verify the result and document it. A list of tools is less useful than a clear explanation of what you would do next.

Add your own resume and a help desk, desktop support or service desk job description to AskDADA. Include systems you have actually used: Windows, Microsoft 365, Active Directory, a ticketing platform or a home lab. Label lab work as lab work. The suggestions should help explain your experience, not invent production incidents for you.

Five questions to practise aloud

  1. A user has internet access but cannot sign in to a company application. What do you check first?
  2. A laptop becomes slow every afternoon. How would you distinguish a device problem from a network or application problem?
  3. A senior colleague asks you to reset an account urgently. How do you verify the request?
  4. Two incidents arrive together: one user cannot print and an entire team cannot use its shared application. How do you prioritise?
  5. Tell me about a time you explained a technical problem to someone without a technical background.

After each answer, ask yourself: what evidence would change my next step? Where would I stop and escalate? Use the job description to decide how much technical detail is appropriate.

Worked example: a sign-in problem

Question: A user cannot access Microsoft 365. What would you do?

Illustrative answer structure: First I would confirm the exact error, when it started, whether other users are affected and whether the problem occurs in the browser as well as the desktop app. I would check service status and network access, then inspect the relevant account and sign-in information within my permissions. If the evidence points to a local cached session, I would explain and try the approved low-risk recovery steps. I would verify access with the user and record what changed. If there are signs of compromise, I would follow the security escalation process rather than repeatedly resetting credentials.

This is a structure, not a claim about your work. Replace general language with the tools and permissions you actually understand. A fresher can explain the same sequence using a clearly labelled lab example.

A 15-minute practice routine

  1. Choose one technical question and write three facts from your experience.
  2. Give a short first answer in your own words.
  3. Use AskDADA suggestions to spot missing context or a better order. Review every technical claim.
  4. Practise a follow-up such as “What if that did not work?”
  5. End the session, keep the useful points and repeat the answer without reading.
